Golden Bauhinia Square Hong Kong
The Golden Bauhinia Square is one and the same with the Expo Promenade outside the huge bird like Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre on the Wan Chai waterfront.
The place is especially significant for the Chinese because it was the location of the return of the former British
colony to the People's Republic of China as well as the formation of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region
(HKSAR).
The sculpture, a gilded flower bauhinia, is 6 meters high. The major part is composed of a bauhinia on a base of red granite pillar on a pyramid.
The sculpture is deemed an important symbol for the Hong Kong people after reunification. On the second day of Chinese New Year and National Day of the People's Republic of China, the square is lighted up by a firework show.
The actual handover deed took place inside the convention centre with President Jiang Zemin and other dignitaries representing China, and Prince Charles handing over forever what was described as "the richest jewel in the British Crown".
To forever mark the joyful occasion the Central government gifted the new SAR with the "Forever Blooming Bauhinia" Sculpture (Golden Bauhinia). This symbol becomes the focus of the SAR and mainland visitors nationalistic fervor and devotion during the Flag-raising ceremonies.
Golden Bauhinia Square Flag-Raising Ceremonies
