Hong Kong Ocean Park is a theme park located in the Southern District of Hong Kong Island. One of the most famous amusement and theme parks in the world, Ocean Park boasts of fun and adventure for friends and family.
The marine-themed amusement park covers the area of Wong Chuk Hang and Nam Long Shan, and is Hong Kong's very own theme park, unlike Disneyland. If it interests you, the traditional Chinese name of Hong Kong Ocean Park is Heung Kong Gong Yuen and the pinyin is Hǎiyáng Gōngyuán.
The mascot of Hong Kong Ocean Park, which goes by the name of Whiskers, is a waving sea lion. He is the first to greet around 4.2 million people who visit Ocean Park every year.
Ocean Park Themes
With an area of 870,000 square meters, the theme park has different themes located at different areas.
- A scenic cable car connects the different parts of Ocean Park. The cable car ride is itself one of the major attractions because of the fantastic hillside views.
- In addition, the world's second longest outdoor escalator is inside Ocean Park also connecting over 40 rides and attractions.
- Some of the popular attractions of Hong Kong Ocean Park are the Giant Panda exhibit, butterfly garden, the huge shark tank, a three-storey aquarium and numerous rides for the adventurous.
Hong Kong Ocean Park isn't just your regular amusement theme park. It also boasts of observatories, well-developed laboratories, an education department, and a Whales and Dolphins Fund. The Park doesn't only give joy and fun to the visitors but also gives back to the environment and its wonderful creatures.
Thus Ocean Park was the first institution in the world to successfully do artificial insemination of bottle nose dolphins. It also developed numerous new breeds of goldfish.
Hong Kong Ocean Park was originally built with generous donations from the Royal Hong Kong Jockey Club and opened its doors 1977. The park is operated by Ocean Park Corporation, which is a statutory board entrusted to offer affordable marine animal education and entertainment while working as a private organization for commercial purposes.
The park has two sections: the lowland section and the headland section. The tour starts from the lowland section and ends at the headland section. In the lowland section the tourists will see many ancient structures such as temples, pavilions and streets. They will also see the habitat, which is the home of two lovely pandas. These pandas are very famous amongst the people. The tourists enjoy watching them eat and sleep.
Dolphin Breeding
Heading to the Dolphin Breeding center here the tourists will get to know about the dolphin's daily living habits and the importance of protecting this marine level. They can view much kind of dolphins there.
Besides the Dolphin Breeding center, tourists will also see many other wildlife exhibits including the butterfly house, the goldfish pagoda and much more.
Guests are then taken to the water paradise for swimming and relaxation. Water paradise is one of the most well equipped sliding swimming pools in Asia. You have several options to choose from. Either you slide in the water or jump in the water through a diving platform. This exotic water slide will want you to return all over again to the Ocean Park.
After all the fun of the lowland section the tourists will be taken to the headland section. In the headland section you will be shown the marvelous maritime landscape comprised of Atoll Reef, Shark Aquarium, Ocean Theatre and Ocean Park Tower.
Atoll Reef is a three or four storied fish bowl. Tourists can view a variety of fishes through the glass windows of the bowl. The collection of fishes include sharks, tropical fish, nautilus, turtles, morays and groupers. Gigantic zebra sharks can also be found in the Atoll Reef.
The Shark Aquarium is an underwater viewing tunnel to observe the dangerous maritime creatures. In the aquarium, Black Tip Reef Shark, Pygmy Swell Shark and other kinds of sharks may startle the tourists as they approach. They might also see divers feeding or playing with sharks.
Ocean Theater is the most famous and popular spot in the whole Ocean Park. It is an open-air theater in which dolphins and sea lions stage a wonderful performance in a huge pond. Under the guidance of trainers, adorable dolphins and sea lions stand in a line or jump into water and raise theirs heads out of water. Tourists will be thrilled by their theatrics.
Ocean Park Tower in the headland section is another aerial vantage point, with a height of 72 meters. It's slowly revolving cabin enables one to catch a panoramic view of the whole park when it rotates from the ground to the top.
