Mai Po Nature Reserve
Originally an area of seasonally-drained shrimp ponds at the Deep Bay mouth of the Shenzhen River, Mai Po Nature Reserve is recognized as a bird migratory site of international importance.
Hong Kong's prime birdwatching, Mai Po Nature Reserve is near Yuen Long in the east of the New Territories. The area is now administered by the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF) and visitors are required to obtain a permit to enter.
Black-headed gulls, Saunders gull, osprey, Dalmatian pelicans and Chinese pond herons all visit the site to feed on the fish in the mud flats and mangroves there, and many other species can also be seen.

North of Yuen Long and past the turning to Mai Po Nature Reserve, San tin is another huddle of old villages with a couple of heritage sites.
On the coast Deep Bay, which is in fact very shallow, Lau Fau Shan is a fishing town famous for its oysters. Inland, Kam Tin is known for its walled villages. Among them, Kat Hing Wai is the easiest to find and has attractive iron gates.
Lok Ma Chau border, a busy location, was popular when border was closed and people wanted a sneak peek into China. It's not needed now, but the view from it is a fascinating contrast of urban Shenzhen and Hong Kong's undeveloped Frontier Closed Area.
