Man Mo Temple Hong Kong
The Man Mo Temple near Hollywood Road is a picturesque tribute to the God of Literature (Man) and the God of War
(Mo). The temple is located about halfway along the road and a stop in its quiet, incense-shrouded interior makes
a pleasant break. You can see giant incense coils hanging overhead.
A Man Mo Temple or Man Mo Miu is a temple for the worship of the civil or literature god Man Tai or Man Cheong and the martial god Mo Tai or Kwan Tai.
The two gods were popularly patronized by scholars and students seeking progress in their study or ranking in the civil examinations in the Ming and Qing dynasties. There are several Man Mo Temples in Hong Kong.
The Man Mo Temple located at Nos. 124-126 Hollywood Road in Sheung Wan is the largest in Hong Kong. Built in 1847, it is part of a complex that comprises three adjacent blocks namely Man Mo Temple, Lit Shing Temple (No. 128 Hollywood Road) and Kung So.
The Man Mo Temple, the main building of the complex, is dedicated to the civil god Man Cheong and the martial god Kwan Ti.
Lit Shing Kung is for the worship of all heavenly gods.
Kung So, to its west, was an assembly hall where community affairs and disputes were settled.
In 1908, the Temple was officially entrusted to Tung Wah Board of Directors. The temple has since been managed by the Tung Wah Group of Hospitals. It was graded as a Grade I historic building in 1993 and it is now a declared monument.
Popular culture Trivia
The Hollywood Road temple made an appearance in the video game Shenmue II for the Dreamcast and Xbox consoles. You can explore the temple and its grounds, however its location in the game is different from its true location.
Hollywood Road and Cat Street
Hollywood Road and Upper Lascar Row (also known as "Cat Street"), are must-see stops on every visitor's itinerary. Crammed with antique shops and an open-air curio market, these quaint locales are ideal places for picking up eclectic souvenirs and gifts.
Everything from Ming dynasty furniture and lotus lamps to Mao badges and ancient snuff bottles is on sale here. Bargain hunters will also enjoy the stalls on Ladder Street, just a few metres downhill - and bargaining over price is all part of the game.
At the western end of the road is Hollywood Road Park, where a photo display shows the original old settlement close to this area.
