Victoria Harbour

One of my favorite places in Hong Kong is the Victoria Harbor.

hong kong travelIt is the deepwater harbour between the Kowloon Peninsula and Hong Kong Island. Throughout Hong Kong's history, Victoria Harbour has always been a natural focal point for the territory.

I like the skyscrapers on the Island side of the harbour with ever increasing height. I think it now has what is widely regarded as the most spectacular city view in the world.

Until 1998, the old Kai Tak Airport on the Kowloon side of the harbour meant that height restrictions were in place but as that airport is now part of Hong Kong history, it is likely tall buildings will play a part of the Hong Kong Skyline on both sides of the harbour in the future.

Surely, the harbour itself and its views are major tourist attractions in their own right. Add to this the stunning annual fireworks displays and light shows, involving many buildings, it's a must see for visitors.

One of the best ways to see the harbour is a trip on the Star Ferry, which runs between Tsim Tsa Tsui (the tip of the Kowloon Peninsula) and Central and Wan Chai Districts on Hong Kong Island. The trip is so cheap, it might as well be free but its gives you a wonderful, if short trip across the harbour that you won't forget.

Transportation across the Victoria harbour.

Three MTR routes also have tunnels under the Harbour. They are namely:

  • Tsuen Wan Line
  • Tseung Kwan O Line (parallel with Eastern Harbour Crossing)
  • Tung Chung Line and Airport Express, which share the same pair of tracks in the tunnel

The Star Ferry routes today are: Central to Tsim Sha Tsui; Wanchai to Tsim Sha Tsui; Central to Hung Hom and Wan Chai to Hung Hom. Some other regular ferry services also operate in the harbour.

For international passenger traffic and traffic to mainland China and Macau, there are two ferry terminals, namely Hong Kong-Macau Ferry Terminal and Hong Kong China Ferry Terminal, and a terminal for cruises, the Ocean Terminal. Another cruise terminal (Kai Tak Cruise Terminal) has been proposed.

Victoria Harbour Reclamation

Much reclamation has taken place in prime locations on the waterfront on both sides of Victoria Harbour. This has raised environmental issues of the protection of the harbour which was once the source of prosperity of Hong Kong, traffic congestion in the Central district, as well as the collusion of the Hong Kong Government with the real estate developers in the territory.
