Hong Kong Government House

macau hotel booking

The beautiful and captivating white Victorian structure that occupies the land between Upper and Lower Albert roads is Hong Kong Government House.

The Government House is situated over the Government Hill in the Central HK District of Hong Kong Island. This place is the official residence of the Chief Executive of Hong Kong. Although the building was made in 1855, it was significantly improved during the Japanese occupation. Thus, the building's architecture features a fusion of the classical and modern forms. The subtle Japanese influence, particularly in the roof eaves, will be evident to the well-trained and cultured artist or architect. Discussions about the House's feng shui vary. One governor reportedly refused to stay there because of unoptimized feng shui.

Under British rule, the Hong Kong Government House was previously the official residence of the Governor from 1855 to 1997. From 1855 to 1997 the house was the official residence and office of 25 of Hong Kong's 28 governors.

Soon after the handover of Hong Kong to Mainland China, the house was transformed into a guesthouse and began to be used for formal banquets and affairs.

The Government House's main entrance faces south and is directed towards the Victoria Peak. (Victoria Peak, or the Peak, as it is commonly referred to, is attracts seven million visitors every year and is perhaps the biggest tourist attraction in Hong Kong. It offers spectacular views of the city and harbors.)

The Government House has a front lawn and a back garden. The beautiful and exotic plants that live in the garden are the numerous azaleas bloom in their majestic splendor in spring. Azaleas are ornamental shrubs grown for their showy flowers of various colors.

Inside the Hong Kong Government House, there is a Ballroom, a Drawing Room, the Dining Room and the Conference Room. These rooms and halls are often used for receiving guests at official state functions.

The Hong Kong Government House is a cultural heritage that, most of the year, is not open to the public. The Garden of Government House is only opened six times a year to the public.
At least one of the openings are done in spring. This enables the public to share in the delight and pleasure of viewing the full bloom of the azaleas. Guests are normally permitted to take a glimpse of the Drawing Room, Dining Room and Ballroom.

The six days of the year where the Government is opened to the public usually happens on weekends. These dates are not pre-planned and are only announced via press-releases. Public visits to the Hong Kong Government House require no admission fees.

The Ballroom of Government House is used three Fridays a month for bookings by charitable, non-profit or public organizations. However, anyone who intends to host an event at the Government House must keep in mind that the events must benefit the community. The nature, type and purpose of the events that are planned to be held on the Government House must keep in line with the identity of Hong Kong Government House as a historical monument and as a venue for official state functions.
