Hong Kong Flag
The Hong Kong Flag (Special Administrative Region of the People's Republic of China) features a stylised, white, five-petal Bauhinia blakeana flower in the centre of a red field.
The architect Taoho designed the Bauhina emblem and the Hong Kong flag. The design of the flag carries mutur political and regional meanings. The colour itself is significant; red is a festive colour for the Chinese people, used to convey a sense of celebration and nationalism.

Moreover, the red colour is identical to that used in the national PRC flag, chosen to signify the link re-established between post-colonial Hong Kong and China. The juxtaposition of red and white on the flag symbolises the one country two systems political principle applied to the region.

The stylised rendering of the Bauhinia blakeana flower, a flower discovered in Hong Kong, is meant to serve as a harmonising symbol for this dichotomy.

For the design of the new Hong Kong flag, there was a competition amongst all interested people, whether they were artists or not. A panel of Hong Kong political figures were nominated as judges of the competition.
The Hong Kong flag is now considered a regional flag that must fly lower than the PRC national flag. It is pinkish red with a stylized bauhinia flower in white in the center.

Words from Donald Tsang about Taoho:
"Time does not allow me to give an exhaustive account of TaoHo's accomplishments. But there are a few that cannot escape a mention tonight. The SAR flag and emblem top this list. Their design captures the essence of "One Country, Two Systems", symbolising Hong Kong's energy within the framework of our nation. Many well-known landmarks in Hong Kong bear TaoHo's name, from the Hong Kong Arts Centre to the Tsim Sha Tsui Promenade. TaoHo's artistic flair comes through not only groundbreaking new structures. He is also adept at preserving Hong Kong's past by renovating some of our historic buildings, including my current residence, Government House."
TaoHo shines as a sculptor, too. One of his masterpieces, Synergy of Dynamic Energy installed at the Hong Kong International Airport, has impressed millions of visitors to this city.
TaoHo's exceptional and diverse talents have been widely recognised around the world. Among his many awards and honours, TaoHo has won several prizes from the Hong Kong Institute of Architects, and was presented with the prestigious Crystal Award in 1997 by the World Economic Forum in Switzerland. He has also led many high profile projects in the Mainland and overseas."
