City University of Hong Kong

The City University of Hong Kong (CityU) is one of the universities in Hong Kong. The university motto is "Officium et Civitas", stating the education philosophy of the university and also its role as educating and training professionally-oriented students.

The university has a community of more than 12,000 undergraduate and 3,000 postgraduate. International students account for around 5% of the student population.

The university is located in Kowloon Tong, Hong Kong, China, which can be reached by the Mass Transit Railway and Kowloon Canton Railway at the Kowloon Tong station. Being in the centre of Hong Kong's territory, it is hoped that it would become one of the university focus in Hong Kong tertiary education.

Originally founded as "City Polytechnic of Hong Kong" in 1984, City University of Hong Kong was granted university status on 1 January 1995.
During the past 20 years, it has grown from a small institution offering 9 academic programmes to a major University with an international reputation for teaching and scholarship

City Polytechnic of Hong Kong now has over 20,000 students on programmes of all levels from associate degree to postgraduate research.

CityU ranks among the best 200 universities and its social sciences departments/programmes have been ranked 61st of the top 100 in the world by the Times Higher Education Supplement in UK signifying the growing international standing of the University.

The university's School of Law is the first in Hong Kong to offer a J.D. degree programme.

Lingnan University

The Lingnan University in Hong Kong is the youngest local university. It was formerly known as the Lingnan College until it was granted full university status on July 30, 1999.

The Lingnan College was established in 1967 and in 1995 it moved from Stubbs Road to its present campus in Tuen Mun.

Since 1995, the president of Lingnan University is Prof CHEN Kwan-yiu, Edward.

Lingnan University is the only liberal arts university in Hong Kong. It believes in the ethos of a liberal arts education to nurture students with personal attributes that are crucial for future success: adaptability, brain-power and creativity.

The original Lingnan University was established in Guangzhou. The Hong Kong Lingnan University aims to continue and foster the tradition and spirit of service of Lingnan University founded in 1888 in Canton, China.

Hong Kong Baptist University

The Hong Kong Baptist University is a public-funded university with a Christian education heritage. Founded in 1956, it is the second-oldest institution of higher learning in Hong Kong.

It was formerly known as the Hong Kong Baptist College, in 1994 it was officially upgraded to have full university status.

The campus is located in the urban Kowloon Tong, it consists of three parts, the Ho Sin Hang Campus, the Shaw Campus and the Baptist University Road Campus.

Hong Kong Institute of Education

The Hong Kong Institute of Education (HKIEd) is one of the eight subsidized universities of Hong Kong. The Institute of Education is the only one dedicated solely to teacher education.

It is formally established on 25 April 1994 by the merger of the following five constituent Colleges in Hong Kong:

  1. the Northcote College of Education
  2. the Grantham College of Education
  3. the Sir Robert Black College of Education
  4. the Hong Kong Technical Teachers’ College
  5. the Institute of Language in Education

In 1997, the Hong Kong Institute of Education moved to its new campus in Tai Po, near the Tai Po Industrial Estate.

The Hong Kong Institute of Education has a Sports Centre at Pak Shek Kok, Tai Po, as well as a Town Centre campus at Tai Kok Tsui near the MTR Olympic Station.

In May 2004, the Hong Kong Institute of Education was granted the self-accrediting status by the Government, in respect of its own teacher education programmes at degree-level and above.

Among the courses offered by the Institute, the BEd(Langauges) has been recognised as the best course ever.

Its first students graduated in 2005 with most already getting teaching offers.

Chinese University of Hong Kong

The Chinese University of Hong Kong is the second oldest of the eight universities in Hong Kong. It is located at Ma Liu Shui, Sha Tin District, New Territories, Hong Kong.

Chinese University was founded in 1963 when New Asia College (1949), Chung Chi College (1951) and United College (1956) were amalgamated. Shaw College was created and joined in 1986. The University is the only tertiary institution in the region accommodating British style college system.

Despite the name, English is also the official media of instruction in the Chinese University, along with Chinese (referring to both Mandarin and Cantonese). Local students are expected to be proficient in all three languages, likewise most staffs are proficient in English.

The Chinese University is a comprehensive-research university offering 53 full time honours degrees, 2 part time programmes, and 37 undergraduate level minor options. The provision of postgraduate level education has long been part and parcel of the University's curriculum; there are altogether 12 Postgraduate Diploma programmes, 132 master's level degrees, including both taught and research programmes, and 62 Doctor of Philosophy programmes.

All undergraduates, in addition to one major and at most two minors at their choosing, have to fulfil a series of assessment tests in respect to general education, sports, language , and information technology.

Hong Kong Polytechnic University

The Hong Kong Polytechnic University is located in Hung Hom, Hong Kong.

The Hong Kong Polytechnic is the largest university funded by the HKSAR government in terms of student population. There are about 1,000 full-time academic staff and about 16,500 students.

The Hong Kong Polytechnic University covers an area about 93,000m². This education institution had a long history before it got its full university status in 1994.

It offers many unique courses to Hong Kong students and it trains many professionals every year.

Hong Kong University of Science and Technology

The university was established by the British-administrated government of Hong Kong in 1991, shortly before the handover of the territory to China in 1997.

It is located on the Clear Water Bay peninsula in Sai Kung District and occupies a total area of 600,000 m². The site was formerly a British army camp — Kohima Camp ; a Scout jamboree was held in 1986 before the commencement of construction.

Despite being Hong Kong's newest university, HKUST has received numerous world-class honours. In 2004, the Times Higher Education Supplement ranked HKUST 42nd overall among the world's best universities, its Engineering and IT programmes 20th, Science 50th, and Social Science 57th. HKUST's MBA program was ranked 44th best in the Financial Times 2005 global rankings.

In 2004, the EMBA program jointly offered by HKUST Business School and the Kellogg School of Management of Northwestern University was ranked 6th globally by the Financial Times.

All of HKUST's faculty members on regular terms hold doctoral degrees, and are recruited from highly competitive international market. Of these, 87% obtained their highest degree from a U.S. or Canadian university, and 76% graduated from American Association of Universities - an organization of 62 leading research institutions in the U.S. and Canada.

University of Hong Kong

The University of Hong Kong (HKU) is an English-language medium university and the oldest tertiary institution in Hong Kong SAR.

The University of Hong Kong's motto is the Latin phrase "Sapientia et Virtus", meaning "wisdom and virtue" or sometimes cited as "Foresight & Social Conscience."

The University has traditionally been one of the best universities in Asia.

The University of Hong Kong can trace its origin back to the former Hong Kong College of Medicine, which was founded in 1877. The University itself was founded when Sir Frederick Lugard, Governor of Hong Kong, laid the foundation stone for Main Building on March 16, 1910.

The university's main campus covers about 160,000 square metres of land on Bonham Road and Pok Fu Lam Road in the Mid-levels area of Hong Kong Island. HKU has some of the few remaining examples of British Colonial architecture in Hong Kong.

It has a medical campus in the Southern District near Sandy Bay and Pok Fu Lam, separate from the main campus, which includes Queen Mary's Hospital and research facilities.

The university also operates the Kadorrie Agricultural Research Center, which occupies 95,000 square metres of land in the New Territories, and the Swire Institute of Marine Science on the southern coast of Hong Kong Island.
