Hong Kong Island East

Tin Hau, North Point, Quarry Bay to Chai Wan

The northern shore of Hong Kong Island is one solid conurbation from one end to the other. Eastern District refers to all areas east of Causeway Bay: from Tin Hau through North Point and Quarry Bay to Chai Wan.

It's all accessible by MTR and tram. Much of the district was originally shipyards. Now it's primarily residential and working-class although one developer is trying to rebrand the district 'Island East' to promote the high-tech office zone at Quarry Bay.

Much of Eastern District consists of older private buildings or public housing. Higher-end developments with good harbour views can be found at Braemar Hill and in a few places along the waterfront.

Shopping

In true Hong Kong style, every street and alley is lined with shops providing local goods and services. There are also shopping centres - Cityplaza at Taikoo Shing is the largest, with an ice rink, a Japanese department store and a cinema.

Attractions and Places of Interest

The best way to see this district is by tram. Take a seat on the top deck and watch as crowded neighbourhoods pass leisurely by.

The line ends at Shau Kei Wan, a firmly working-class district which used to be fishing port and still has a typhoon shelter full of boats.

You can follow Shau Kei Wan Main Street East to reach the Tam Kung Temple on the waterfront. This was built in 1905 and is the largest in Hong Kong dedicated to this god.

The Museum Coast Defence is just a little further along on your right.

The hills above Chai Wan are terraced with tightly-packed cemeteries (a grave overlooking the sea is considered good feng shui). Among them, the Sai Wan War Cemetery is tranquil place remembers the Commonwealth soldiers lost to the fighting in Hong Kong.

From King's Road in Quarry Bay, Mount Parker Road leads uphill into Tai Tam Country Park, passing Woodside, a red-brick colonial mansion.

A side trail leads off to an area of hillside cooking stoves, built before World War Two to feed the population in the event of siege, but never used.

There is a small street market at Marble Road in North Point. For an alternative harbour crossing experience, ferries sail from the North Point piers to Hung Hom, Kowloon City and Kwun Tong.
