Hong Kong Star Ferry

macau hotel booking

Central Hong Kong has been linked to Kowloon by the Star Ferry for over a hundred years. The green and white, or heavily branded, tub-shaped ferries are a familiar sight around Hong Kong and, as such, a symbol of the city.

The Star Ferry was once the only way to reach the mainland from Hong Kong Island. Its route is now duplicated by road and rail tunnels, but remains the best way to cross Victoria Harbour, and it is a steal at just $2.20 for crossing to Tsim Sha Tsui.

Star Ferry decks give one of the best available views, day or night, of the waterfronts of Hong Kong Island and Kowloon – not to mention the plethora of ocean traffic surging through the shipping lanes.

The boats themselves are cast-iron veterans to delight schoolboys of all ages.

The Star ferry pier is located near the General Post Office. A few Hong Kong's last remaining rickshaw pullers hang around for photo opportunities.

Here is a few things you can do with the Star Ferry

Cross the Harbour

The Star Ferry has been making the trip across Victoria harbour for over 100 years and the magic of the crossing is still there. It's best at dusk, when the cityscape starts to light up with neon on both sides of the water. As an alternative, take a harbour tour. The extended routes give you different perspectives of Hong Kong's greatest natural asset.

Visit the Hong Kong Cultural Centre

Occupying a prime site on the TST waterfront, the Cultural Centre is one Hong Kong's largest performance venues. In addition regular shows, free performances are often held in the foyer or on the outdoor piazza which faces the harbour. The clock tower which stands between the Cultural Centre and the Star Ferry dates from 1915 and is the only surviving part of the former railway terminus.

See Symphony of Lights Cruise

The Guinness Book World Records has declared the nightly Symphony of Lights to be a world's largest permanent sound and light show. Colors and lights are accompanied by music and narration. Take a two-hour cruise board a traditional Star Ferry and enjoy the multimedia show while catching a sea breeze.

Visit Statue Square

Reached by underpass from Star Ferry concourse, Statue Square is the nearest thing Hong Kong has to an official city centre. It's worth standing here to take some of the landmarks. With you back to the harbour, you face the striking headquarters of HSBC and, to its left, the angular Bank of China.
